A highly charged atmosphere pervaded as vendors and buyers negotiated prices, discussed quality and placed orders for venues and upcoming gala events. I was unsure if the banter was part of the daily theatre, but it was an intoxicating charge of emotion, noise and buzz for someone like me. I was in heaven! Fresh blooms from all over the world had been flown in overnight. There were peonies, hydrangeas and orchids from New Zealand, bulbs of every description from Holland, huge 6 foot velvety red roses from Colombia, and big bundles of roses every colour from local growers. Everything you could desire, and if it wasn’t there, you could order it for the days following....at a price!
It was all very low-tech as buyers walked in and out selecting arm loads of flowers. I believe an auction room have been build recently, but it would be a shame to miss the early morning drama, the camaraderie and rivalry that gave the place so much life that morning. Check out some of the photos.
